Record Export Numbers

India's Spices Board has confirmed FY 2023-24 as a landmark year for Indian spice exports, with total shipment value reaching ₹38,256 crore ($4.6 billion USD) — a 14.7% increase over the previous fiscal year and the highest export value in India's recorded trade history.

Top Export Commodities

Chilli leads the export basket at 26% of total volume, followed by Cumin (18%), Mint products (14%), Spice Oils & Oleoresins (13%), and Turmeric (11%). The European Union collectively remains India's largest destination bloc at 21% of export value, followed by the United States (16%), Bangladesh (8%), and UAE (7%).

Fastest Growing Categories

The most significant growth categories in 2023-24 were Turmeric (+34% by value, driven by nutraceutical demand for high-curcumin varieties), Cardamom (+28%, supply tightness from Guatemala driving demand to Indian Alleppey quality), and Organic Certified Spices (+41%, reflecting accelerating clean-label consumer trends in developed markets).

FY 2024-25 Outlook

For B2B buyers, the critical market insight from 2024 is the growing premium spread between certified organic and conventional spice pricing. Organic Lakadong turmeric commanded an average FOB premium of $3.20/KG over conventional commercial Erode turmeric — a 45% differential that is widening as European organic retailer demand outpaces available certified supply.

Looking ahead to FY 2024-25, industry analysts project continued growth driven by increasing nutraceutical ingredient demand, expansion of Indian food culture globally, and India's strategic Free Trade Agreement expansion with GCC and ASEAN markets that is expected to reduce import duties for Indian spices in key growth markets.
